A few posts ago I talked about my new experiment with VOIP, and in particular, Vonage. Well after using VOIP for a few weeks, I have a few additional comments to share. First, I am still overall very happy with the service but I have discovered two kinks that I wish didn't exist. First, I like to play music from my ITunes account while I am working - in particular, when I am writing or creating a training presentation. I have found that if my Vonage phone is plugged into my USB drive (which is how it works) that I can only hear the music through my earphones and not through the computer's speakers. I don't really like this since I am not too keen on sitting here with earplugs in all day. I have decided that I will unplug my Vonage USB phone when I am working so I can listen to the music like I prefer. Although I won't be able to quickly receive phone calls which come into my office number, I think this will be a good thing in the end. I have to work hard to discipline myself to not answer every call that comes in or check emails frequently and this new method will hopefully help me to stay focused on the project at hand. (For those of you who know me well and need to reach me quickly, please call me on my cell phone which I will always have close by).
The second thing I have discovered is that if I want my Vonage calls to forward to another number (I often forward calls to my cell phone when I am travelling) that again, I need to have the Vonage device plugged into the USB. This isn't the end of the world but something I didn't realize.
If anyone else decided to try out Vonage or uses another VOIP provider, please share your comments. That's all for now!
